designing stamp

return to step 1: preparing kīhei
go to Step 3: printing kīhei

lau kāpala: vegetable stamp

Lau kāpala is a vegetable stamp. For this stamp, choose a native Hawaiian plant that is relevant to the course you are enrolled in. Ti-leaf, banana, kalo, ʻulu, and loulu are some examples of popular vegetable stamps.

materials needed:
  • native Hawaiian plant (must have kumu approval)
  • x-acto knife/scissors to make cross-section of plant (usually the stem) - do not print the whole leaf!
  • 4"x4" cloth to print sample swatch
  • newspapers or old rag to place under swatch when printing
  • acrylic paint

Before printing on the actual kīhei, gather your materials and prepare a sample swatch:
  • approve plant with kumu.
  • gather plant and prepare stamp.
    • make a cross-section of the stem (or other part of plant) to use as the stamp. Below are sample swatches using different plant cross-sections:

  • before printing kīhei, kumu must approve sample swatch.

ʻohe kāpala: bamboo stamp

.ʻOhe kāpala is a bamboo stamp. For this stamp, you will create a design to carve into the ʻohe; the design should be relevant to the course you are enrolled in.

materials needed:
  • ʻohe (provided by kumu)
  • utility knife
  • x-acto knife
  • sand paper
  • 4"x4" cloth to print sample swatch
  • newspapers or old rag to place under swatch when printing
  • acrylic paint, sponge brush

Step 1: Carve the ʻohe blank & sandpaper until smooth.

Step 3: Before printing on the actual kīhei, gather your materials and prepare a sample swatch:
  • Approve carved ʻohe with kumu.
  • Stamp a 4"x4" sample of your design on a piece of cloth (t-shirt, pillowcase, etc).  be creative with placement of ʻohe.
  • Before printing kīhei, kumu must approve sample swatch.

For my HAW courses, your kīhei will be based on :
  • HAW101 -  moʻokūʻauhau / autobiography
  • HAW102 - ʻōlelo noʻeau. *kāpala should be different from 101 kāpala.
  • HAW201 - nane. *kāpala should be different from 101-102 kāpala.
  • HAW202 - kaʻao. *kāpala should be different from 101-201 kāpala.
